What is phosphorous and how much is in your beverages?
Phosphorous is a dietary mineral found in many of the foods we consume such as milk, meat, fish, eggs, cereals and bread. Some soft drinks also contain phosphorous but in far smaller amounts than in most other foods. For example, a cup of milk contains 250mg of phosphorus while a 12 oz can of Pepsi contains just over 50mg. The Reference Daily Intake for phosphorous set by the U.S. Food & Drug Association for adequate nutrition is 1000mg per day.

Where does phosphorous come from?
The phosphorous that is found in some beverages comes from phosphoric acid, an ingredient that is sometimes used to provide tartness. Since very small amounts of phosphoric acid are used, the amount of phosphorous in our products is very low. Importantly, phosphorous levels in soft drinks are well within the limits set by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and are safe for consumption by people of all ages.

What's the relationship between phosphorous and bone health?
Recent science has shown that we need a balanced intake of both calcium and phosphorus for optimum bone health. Just as we need calcium as an essential mineral for bone strength, we also need phosphorus.
